History

Dobbs Ferry, located in Westchester County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to pre-colonial times when it was inhabited by the Wecquaesgeek, a branch of the Lenape people. European settlement began in the late 17th century, and the area became strategically significant during the American Revolutionary War—most notably in 1781 when George Washington and French General Rochambeau met there to plan the decisive march to Yorktown. The village gets its name from Jeremiah Dobbs, a local ferryman who operated a ferry across the Hudson River in the early 18th century. Dobbs Ferry gradually evolved into a residential suburb, officially incorporating as a village in 1873, and today it blends historical charm with a vibrant, modern community.

Vibe

Dobbs Ferry has a charming, laid-back, and quietly sophisticated vibe that blends small-town warmth with suburban cosmopolitanism. Nestled along the Hudson River, it offers stunning river views, tree-lined streets, and a walkable downtown filled with cafes, local shops, and restaurants that lean toward artisanal and farm-to-table. It’s popular with families, artists, and professionals seeking a balance between nature and access to New York City—just 40 minutes away by train. The village feels tight-knit and community-focused, with events like farmers markets and summer concerts, yet has an understated cultural energy thanks to nearby institutions like Mercy University and the influence of creative residents. It’s the kind of place where people know their neighbors but still enjoy privacy and space.
